Search Engine Optimisation

Last SEO test today

This time the SEO test is a bit different.

Again it is to see how long it takes the search engines to find a brand new page, but this time the link to the new page is in the blogroll of this site in the sidebar.

Do External Links Help SEO

I’ve always believed that having a number of external links on our websites to related websites has always benefited our SEO campaigns.

A few months ago one of our sites that has been ranked number 1 in google for the last 5 years dropped down a few positions.

Initially I tweaked the onsite optimisation, but no joy.

I then did a small linking campaign, but again no joy.

Earlier this week I decided to have a look at  the external linking and set up 3 new links to authoritive, information providing sites related to ours.

Today the site went back to number 1 :o

Optimizing an Established Site

Read an interesting post over at UKBF today where someone was asking about optimizing an established site that is already doing well but wants to go to the next level.

It was the sort of question which sums up exactly why I don’t really do SEO for other people anymore.

The reason why I don’t do SEO for other peoples sites, especially well established sites, is that I have always considered SEO to be a form of gambling.

Basically we are always doing as much as possible to gain those top rankings, but always have to rein things in a bit so as not to overstep the mark with the google webmaster guidelines.

Now if I’m optimising my own sites I am still gambling, but this time gambling with my own property, if I’m stuck in number 7 on google, but are determined to get top 1 or 2, it is up to me if I push things a little further, i.e. do a bit of heavy link building, write some anchor text link rich articles, a bit of blog commenting, forum posting or pull in some favours from various networks.

Although these things are technically against the google guidelines you can bet your bottom dollar the 6 listings above you are doing similar and if you want the top spot you have to decide if it’s worth taking the risk, and if you do take it, just how far you’re prepared to push it.

When was the Google Florida Update

Looking back at some of myold sites I found some which were obviously pre the Google Florida update.

H1 to H5 all contained the same keyword, alt attributes of all images contained the keyword, every link to the site contained the same anchor text, and the text of the page featured the keyword far too often.

It got me thinking about just when was the google Florida update and after lookin back at some old writing I was amazed to see it was Mid November 2003.

It was not long after this that I started using Sim64 for my SEO testing until eventually that got hit by the minus 30 penalty.

I often think about where I would be now if I hadn’t pushed Sim64 to far.

In it’s heyday I was earning in excess of £1, 000 a week just from a few affiliate programs  I was running on it, had I not pushed it to far, and if I had of  known back then what I know now I could have easily doubled, probably trebled what I was earning from  it.

What it did teach me though was not to have all my eggs in one basket, not to rest on my laurels and always to remember we are just on borrowed time when relying on Google.

Although 80% of my income still comes from one main site I now also have 40+ other sites tickling along and have a system in place so that if my main site should get hit by an update similar to the Florida update it shouldn’t take me long to get things back on track.

BBC Session ID’s indexed by Google

I have noticed in the last couple of days that BBC session ids are being indexed by Google.

Don’t really know the implications for SEO yet but will be looking in to it more.
